The Middlesex Dynamic Tool Buffer is the natural evolution of material transport systems in production environments built on OHT (Overhead Hoist Transport) technology.

Its global mission in this industry is to correct the defects of existing AMHS (the discrete vehicle based material handling systems). These existing systems require the excessive accumulations of work in process, thus degrading factory cycle time efficiency.

The excessive work flow storage of the discrete vehicle based systems (central stockers and storage shelves in production bays) is reduced with Dynamic Equipment Buffers (DEB) based on our super conveyors.

The primary benefit in using DEBs is the increased utilization efficiency of the existing vehicle transport lines (defined as the number of transport moves with payload vs. the total number of vehicle moves)

This intelligent module, installed near the processing tools, replaces traditional high-cost stockers and dramatically improves FOUP (Front-Opening Unified Pod) flow management.

The Dynamic Tool Buffer’s primary function is to receive FOUPs from OHTs, dynamically store and prioritize them in a circular conveyor buffer, and then make them instantly available for OHT pickup and tool loading.

Unlike static systems, the Dynamic Tool Buffer introduces automated sorting and priority logic, ensuring FOUPs are always available where and when needed. The result is greater efficiency, lower costs, and improved FAB stability.

How the Dynamic Tool Buffer works

Once a FOUP is delivered by an OHT into the Dynamic Tool Buffer, the system automatically manages the following steps:

  • The conveyor buffer sorts FOUPs by operational priority and tool availability, dynamically queuing them in the most efficient order
  • When an OHT requests a FOUP, the selected carrier is automatically routed to the OHT pickup point, ready for immediate delivery to the tool port.

This enables:

  • a drastic reduction in tool idle time
  • the elimination of rigid stocker architecture and logistical complexity
  • significantly lower operational costs

The Dynamic Tool Buffer was developed as a core component of the Middlesex-patented Hybrid- AMHS system and is fully compatible with both existing and future OHT infrastructures
